With an interdisciplinary background in Biology, Human Geography and Industrial Ecology Bertus has over 10 years experience in CSR and sustainable business. He is an experienced consultant, entrepreneur, university lecturer and trainer.
In these roles he works with a range of different types of organizations and people. He often works with universities and young professionals on innovative solutions for SME’s and MNC’s. He has extensive experience in working on strategy and implementation and has used this to develop several innovative programmes in which young professionals bring science and business based sustainability solutions towards a wider practice (in the Netherlands, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Jakarta, Kuala Lumpur and Singapore). Bertus enjoys teaching. He is a well respected teacher and mentor in the programs and courses he has created which is reflected in the students high regard for him and positive evaluations.
Bertus has a global network, with working experience in a range of countries. He has worked on a reforestation project in Espirito Santo, Brazil and has extensive experience and business connections in the Asia-Pacific region, managing over 25 sustainable business related projects in the region for companies such as AkzoNobel, DSM, Unilever, Heineken, FrieslandCampina, Royal HaskoningDHV, Shell, Shangri-la Hotels and Resorts, the MTR, The Waste Transformers and other stakeholders such as universities in Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore and the ministry of foreign affairs of the Netherlands.
Extra curricular activities:
- Working with Joris Buis (UvA) on a popular science book about the sixth mass extinction and giving public lectures about the topic (e.g. Artis Academy, Spui25)
- Coaching young professionals and entrepreneurs working in sustainability
